Breast cancer can be categorised as early or advanced (metastatic). Early breast cancer includes tumours anatomically staged as ductal carcinoma in situ (stage 0) and local disease that may involve the regional lymph nodes (stages IIA and IIB) or locally invasive disease (stage IIIA). The aim of treatment is curative. This involves surgery, with or without radiotherapy (depending on the extent to which cancer has spread), followed by adjuvant endocrine therapy or chemotherapy, depending on patient preference and clinical judgement (Figure 2). 2
